English

English has long held a place of special importance and regard in Scoil Mhuire, integral to the vision and essence envisaged by Miss Cahill and Miss O’Donovan in Scoil Mhuire’s founding days. The joy of reading, the delight in exploring thought and debate, the escape and relief of creative literary pursuits, are all at the heart of what is celebrated and promoted in our school to this day. The study of English to enrich for life has been, and continues to be, the ultimate goal. Young women who can read, write, think and articulate their thoughts are equipped to  succeed in whatever field they choose – in this way we aim to “nurture for life”.

English invites students into rich experiences with language so that they become fluent and thoughtful users; more aware of its significance in their lives. The subject develops a range of literacy, oral and critical thinking skills in a variety of areas; personal, social and cultural.

Students develop a wide range of skills and awareness of concepts through studying English at both Junior and Senior level.

These skills allow them to interpret and enjoy a range of material so that they become independent learners in school and in the world beyond school; enabling the individual to enter into and thrive in a multiplicity of careers, while also contributing to their personal perception and experience of life.

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”    (Wittgenstein)
